Happy Birthday Eddie!
My brother Eddie was with us three days later on his birthday, so of course, I had to give him the birthday treatment.

Happy Birthday to Me!
It is my birthday for 1 more minute! Thanks to everyone for birthday wishes. I had a great day, I hope to post details tomorrow!
The Big 3-0!
Yes, it is true. I am officially no longer in my twenties. I actually thought it would be much more traumatic, but I have had several people tell me that their 30s were their best years. At any rate, I had a great birthday!
It actually started the night before, with my in-laws. After all the festivities of the 24th, we went out to dinner and had cake and presents afterwards. I got some craft money (who couldn't use more of that?) and my sister-in-law, Jennie, the resident amateur photographer, surprised me with a darling picture of my little Lily. She had taken the picture when they were watching her during our move, so I hadn't seen it yet. I seriously got a little emotional when I saw it. It just captures her personality so well. What do you think?
We had a delicious carrot cake (with walnuts, the only true way to eat it, yum!).
We then watched some fireworks and drove home late.
The next day, my aunt, Judy, and I started the morning early by going to a taping of the local morning show, Good Things Utah. We were on tv a couple of times, and we got lots of goodies. I know it is cheesy, but I have always wanted to go do this, so if you also have wanted to do this, just go. It was a lot of fun. Here is the station logo. We had to wait outside for a few minutes before going in.
Here is Angel Shannon, a local personality, getting ready for the cooking segment. They made a really tasty looking shrimp fettucine.

He was a 15 year old published author. He and his mom drove down from Idaho, so that he could be featured on the show. He wrote a book called [you know, I can't remember.] It sounded kind of interesting. Wow, I am twice his age and have never even been close to getting something published! I better get busy.
Me and the hosts of Good Things Utah. When the taping was done, we were able to go up and get pictures with "the girls." The little kids are Nicea's daughters, who were on set that day as well.

When we got back from the show, we went to one of my favorite places, Siegried's. It is a German deli in downtown Salt Lake. This is a picture of Lily and me waiting in line. That arrow is in a good place to point to the birthday girl. Luckily the Soup Nazi wasn't there.

Me enjoying my spaetzle, a German noodle with gravy. Matt thinks they are just about the grossest thing he has ever tried, but there is just something so delicious about them. I think I would be happy to have just a plate of these. I have a Wolfgang Puck cookbook that has a recipe. I won't post it here, but part of the technique calls for pushing dough through a colander. Yum!
I was blissfully taking a birthday nap (very rare these days) when I was rudely awakened by a crown being shoved on my head and balloons being showered over me :). I was then showered with gifts(more craft stuff and a trip to Colorado to see my sister).
Later that evening, Judy and I went to the Conference Center downtown to see the Osmond Family and the Tabernacle Choir in concert. Judy works at the Church Office Building and has some connections, so we got really good seats. Let's just say that Elder Robert D. Hales was sitting a few rows behind us! The concert was a lot of fun. I didn't get any pictures, since cameras weren't allowed, but here is one from the Deseret News. (I have a story about Donny from my mission, but that is a blog for another time.)

Okay, this blog is starting to be all about food! But these are special treats I only get once a year. After the concert, the boys stayed up to give me this strawberry pie (my favorite!!!) with candles on top. The perfect end to a great day.

Another attempt at hair dressing
So after the "success" of my earlier hair styling attempts, I thought I would do something fun with Lily's hair. I got started, and she kept staying with me, so I kept going. I took sections of her hair, twisted it, and then put a rubber band around it.

That night, she actually slept with most of them in. I just had to take out one on each side, so she could curl her hair around her fingers, which she does when she is tired.
The next morning, I took out the twists, and this is the result:

We went to the in-laws for the 24th later, and her hair had calmed considerably. She then went swimming and it came all out, but it was fun while it lasted. I will have to find some of those pink sponge curlers for next time. Does anyone know where to find them?

The 24th
Since Matt and I have been together, we have spent every 24th of July with his family. In some ways, it is a bigger holiday to him and his family than Christmas. All his extended family gets together for a big reunion. It is always fun to catch up with everyone, see how the kids have grown, and just relax. Spanish Fork has a big parade in the morning. Matt's mom lives along the parade route and they set up tents and chairs for everyone. Then we have a great picnic afterwards, the kids play in the backyard on the swing set and in the kiddie pool, we take naps, go to the craft booths, and just enjoy ourselves. We always have a great time!

A post about my (lack-of) abilities
So, on a hot and slow Wednesday, in a fit of...insanity, craziness, boredom, whatever you want to call it...I grabbed a pair of scrapbooking (?!?) scissors, stood in front of the bathroom mirror, and started hacking. It looks so easy on TV. You know when people want to change their identity because they are on the run from someone and they cut their hair in a dingy motel room, sometimes with a razor, and it looks as if it had been cut and styled by a professional? That's because it has been cut and styled by a professional. Either that or it is a wig. Well, in my case, it was neither. It was shaggy and uneven, and really, REALLY, short! This is the photo I took of me.
Well, I realized what I had done and ran upstairs just as Matt and Lily came inside. I quickly pulled it back, but Matt knew immediately what happened, because I had been talking about getting my hair cut for a while. He was surprisingly calm, suggesting only slightly firmly that I should go somewhere to even it up. I went to get my shoes, and he followed me downstairs, just in case I should happen to find another pair of scissors laying around. I didn't, and I luckily found a really good place just up the street from us that was willing to squeeze me in. The stylist, Mallorie, did a great job. She said I wasn't the first one that had attempted a self-makeover, but that next time, I should leave things to the professionals.

Eddie and Tommy came to visit, and they took Lily to see the "aminals." She LOVES the zoo, and now that we live so close, yes, we go there about once a week. The first picture is of Tommy and Lily. Her hair is done to look like giraffe horns. She only let me do her hair because I told her she couldn't go to the zoo unless she let me. Yes, I resorted to bribery. She has all that great hair, and I hardly ever get to play with it!
This is a picture of Matt not wanting a picture taken of him. This is how a lot of his pictures end up looking. Isn't that a nice forearm?

We have moved!
Well, this is kind of old news by now, but we moved almost a month ago now. My mom's mom is not doing well, and she needs 24 hour supervision, so our family moved in with my aunt and her to help take care of her. It's been a big change, and we have all had some adjusting to do, but it has been okay. Lily definitely misses her big sisters, though maybe she can start playing with kids her own age. A friendly little boy tried to give her a hug at the library today, but she wasn't too sure about that. She definitely likes the neighborhood though, especially going for walks!

Visit with California Cousins
Alicia and her girls came out to visit over the Fourth of July weekend. We had a great time! The first picture is of Lily and Ellie. They wanted to wear their matching shirts!
The second picture is of Ellie and Maddie. Yes, we had three LARGE car seats across the backseat of the car. I'm glad we were able to shut the doors.
